Most people in the Carolina Piedmont tend to think of the Lake Norman area as a wealthy playground. The inland sea itself, Lake Norman, was created partly for that purpose. But the towns around Lake Norman do get forgotten about. Many in North Carolina might remember Mooresville and the NASCAR presence in the area. However, usually locals only remember the rest.
I want to spotlight a town that brings a different vibe to the Lake Norman area, Davidson, NC. This quaint southern town sounds out against the rest of the area… in a good way. It does carry the wealthy Lake Norman stereotype, with a median household income of $104,605 in 20231. But the town still feels very welcoming to all walks of life.
Beyond this quaint and welcoming feel, Davidson, NC, features the notable landmark of Davidson College. This presbyterian-built college was founded in 1837, featuring beautiful, historical architecture. I personally cannot think of a similar-looking place in the Charlotte Metro. It makes the drive up I-77 worth it for any Charlotte residents who visit.
College
Visiting the College of Davidson is a worthwhile sightseeing trip. I recommend preparing for a long walk or bringing your bicycle to ride around. You’ll see stunning architecture on campus. Their main library around the center of campus is my favorite. You can also see historical buildings around the campus from the mid-1800’s. Finally, basketball is a major sport for Davidson. So, stay awhile to watch one of their games.
Downtown
Right next to the College of Davidson’s campus is downtown Davidson. Walk along Main Street to visit Summit Coffee, get some ice cream, or enjoy some fine dining. The downtown area is lively on the weekends, especially when the farmers market is live. You can even walk along some of the historic neighborhoods just off Main Street.
Dining
Downtown Davidson, NC, and the immediate area feature a mix of dining options. The Famous Toastery is a prime breakfast spot. For lunch, go to the Pickled Peach for a farm-to-table approach. Just down Griffith Street, you’ll find simpler lunch spots like Sabor or Sully Steamers. For dinner, Kindred, the Flat Iron, and Brickhouse Tavern all feature elegant dining options.
Nature Preserve and Lake Davidson
A big landmark in Davidson, NC, is Lake Davidson. It is technically part of Lake Norman, but I-77 makes this section landlocked. The Davidson Nature Preserve is right along the banks of Lake Davidson. You can enjoy activities like kayaking and fishing. There is even a small island in the middle of the lake to check out.
